President’s Message
By: Owen Autry
Dear Dolphin Divers of Sacramento, April 6, 2025
It’s that time of year again…time to renew your membership with Dolphin Divers of Sacramento!
We hope you’ve had a fantastic year of diving, adventure, and camaraderie with your fellow Dolphin Divers of Sacramento. Your membership supports our club’s ongoing efforts to provide exciting dive trips, social gatherings, safety training, and of course the always entertaining, Bubbles newsletter.
Renewing is easy! Just visit our website at www.dolphindivers.org or bring your completed renewal form and dues to the next club meeting.
We appreciate your continued support and look forward to another great year of diving together. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to any board member or reply to this message.
As many of you know, and for those that are not aware, the Round Table pizza that we have had our general meeting at for many years is now closed permanently. With the slowing of the economy, and the hardship of the Round Table owners, they have decided to close this location in their portfolio. They announced the closing of the week of our March General Meeting, so we were fortunate to have our last meeting there and say goodbye to the staff.
Good news, our D.D.S. Board started looking around all the Sacramento area and within two weeks found a new location for us to try and see if they are a good fit for us, and us for them. We are testing the new location at Mountain Mike’s Pizza located at 2220 Gold Springs Ct. Gold River, CA 95670. Their website is www.mountainmikespizza.com/locations/gold-river-gold-springs so go check them out. I am attaching a couple of pictures that I took when I was there recently.
I would like to thank those of you that emailed us with your ideas and suggestions on new locations and what we should be looking for while on our search. A special thank you to Corinne Fuerst for her dedicated search for a new location – and Ed and Brad for your assistance. We have a great board that works well together for the club.
Speaking 2025-2026, and the new and renewing board members, we have our annual general meeting to vote on the new board and for all for the new and returning members, free pizza. We ask you to please purchase your own drink of choice from Mountain Mike’s; they have sodas, beer, wine, as well as water. Please arrive at 6:45 when the first pizzas will come out and then more will come out every 15 minutes.
Please note, our next Dolphin Club General Meeting will be held in-person on Wednesday, April 16th, 2025, from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm at Mountain Mike’s Pizza located at 2220 Gold Springs Ct. Gold River, CA 95670 and we are able to have a Zoom link for this meeting. Marilyn will send out more information prior to the meeting.
Hope to see you in the water and bubble’s up!!

Help Keep Our Waterways Clean
Every year, Dolphin Divers of Sacramento helps keep a small portion of the American River Clean when we have our Great American River Clean Up dive. During the GARCU dive, we pull out all the cans, bottles, trash and treasure that we can find. During past years, we have pulled out tons of trash from the American River. In September of this year, we will do the same.
But you do not need to wait for September to make a difference. Anytime you make a dive, take along a mesh bag and pick up the trash you find. Folsom Lake, the American River, Lake Natomas…..you make a dive, and you will find trash. Sometimes, you will find a lost item that has some value. GoPro cameras, watches, sunglasses, wallets, well you get the idea. You never know what you will find.
Dolphin Divers will be at Monterey next weekend for the Easter Dive. We always find junk tossed in the water from the shore hotels and restaurants. Kayakers and boaters are another source of trash. If you dive along the Getty, you may find some lost dive gear.
If you are interested in viewing what other divers are doing to help clean up our waters, the following article and YouTube series might be of interest. Marlette Lake on the backside of Tahoe is the focus of this article.
INCLINE VILLAGE – A Lake Tahoe nonprofit has a new show highlighting all the trash found at the bottom of lakes around the country and the effort to not only get it out of the water but keep it out.
“When you go 10-15 feet below the surface, it looks closer to one of the dirtiest areas on Highway 80,” said Colin West, the founder of Clean Up The Lake. Cones, cans and even car batteries are just a few of the things West has found diving in Tahoe and in lakes around the country. “Old pieces of Model T Fords with kind of the whole axel and infrastructure,” West said. “Two weeks ago, I found a tire from a Model T Ford.”
West is the founder of Clean Up The Lake, a Tahoe-based nonprofit, and a new docuseries called “What Lies Unseen” shows people their efforts to preserve freshwater lakes around the country. “They all seem to have that issue that things have been out of sight and out of mind for decades when it comes to litter issues or climate change,” West said. And the hope is the more people see what’s down there, the more they’ll think about what they put in them. “We’re showing everyone what’s going on in their backyards and lakes,” West said. “We’re working and showing different characters in each location we go to. And also, these beautiful and stunning visuals of each lake we go to.”
The series can be watched on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/@MAKEADIFFERENCECREATIVE

DAN INSURANCE
So this month marked the month that I had to renew my DAN coverage. I decided to add a list of why Every Scuba Diver Should Have Divers Alert Network (DAN) Insurance.
Scuba diving is an incredible adventure, but like any sport, it comes with risks. Divers Alert Network (DAN) insurance is designed specifically to support divers in emergencies and is considered essential by professionals and recreational divers alike. Here are several reasons why every scuba diver should consider having DAN insurance:
- Emergency Medical Coverage
DAN provides coverage for hyperbaric chamber treatments, emergency transportation, and other medical expenses related to diving accidents—costs that are often excluded from standard health insurance policies. - Worldwide Protection
Whether you’re diving in your home country or on a remote island, DAN insurance follows you globally. This means you’re covered anywhere your dive adventure takes you. - 24/7 Emergency Hotline
DAN’s emergency hotline offers immediate access to diving medical professionals. Their staff includes dive medicine experts who can guide treatment decisions and evacuation logistics when time is critical. - Evacuation Assistance
In remote locations, evacuation can cost tens of thousands of dollars. DAN coordinates and covers medically necessary evacuations, ensuring you get the help you need without the financial burden. - Dive Accident Support
DAN helps manage post-accident care, including follow-up medical consultations, travel arrangements, and handling paperwork for insurance claims. - Affordable Peace of Mind
For a relatively low annual premium, DAN insurance offers extensive coverage and peace of mind, making it a smart investment for divers of all levels. - Support for Dive Safety Research
By joining DAN, you’re also supporting their mission to improve diver safety through research, education, and community outreach.
Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced diver, DAN insurance is one of the best ways to protect yourself and your dive buddies. It’s not just insurance—it’s a safety net that lets you dive with confidence.
